AI's Greatest Power Lies at the Intersections, Google Research Chief Says

AI Research·October 7, 2026

Google's top research executive told MIT Technology Review that artificial intelligence will reshape everything from drug discovery to power grids, but its real transformative potential emerges when it converges with other technologies and disciplines. Speaking at EmTech Future 2026, Yossi Matias, VP and Head of Google Research, sketched a vision of AI as a foundation technology that amplifies breakthroughs across biology, manufacturing, infrastructure, and science.

The conventional narrative treats AI as a standalone force remaking the world. But Matias argued the opposite. When AI intersects with domain expertise, existing infrastructure, and other emerging technologies, that's where the outsized impact happens. The biology angle matters most. AI is already accelerating protein folding simulations and drug screening, two areas where the technology's pattern-matching abilities align with decades of accumulated biological knowledge. The same logic applies to manufacturing and infrastructure. Factories equipped with AI can optimize supply chains in real time. Power grids can predict failures and reroute energy more efficiently. In each case, AI doesn't work alone. It works because it sits at the junction of computational power and domain specificity.

This framing carries implications for how organizations should invest in AI. It's not enough to build better models or train larger datasets. The institutions winning the AI race will be those that can wire their AI systems into existing expertise and infrastructure. Google's own work underscores this. The company's advances in materials science, climate modeling, and molecular simulation all hinge on pairing machine learning with specialized research teams and institutional knowledge.

For the broader tech industry, Matias's perspective suggests a shift away from the "AI as panacea" narrative that dominated 2024 and early 2025. The real story is messier and more interesting. AI will unlock value in unexpected combinations. Biology plus AI equals better medicine. Manufacturing plus AI equals better efficiency. Science plus AI equals faster discovery. But none of those equations work without both sides.
